Outer Baduy or Inner Baduy? The differences and how to choose
Updated 23 October 2026
The Baduy are a Sundanese sub-group living in the Kendeng Mountains of Lebak regency, Banten. They follow pikukuh, customary law that limits technology and interference with nature. The community is split into two groups, and visiting each is a very different experience.

Who are they?
Inner Baduy live in three core villages: Cibeo, Cikeusik and Cikertawana. They keep customs most strictly and use no modern technology. Outer Baduy are spread over dozens of villages around the core area. They are more open to visitors and often act as a bridge between guests and the Inner Baduy community.
Both are one people with the same ancestors and customs, led by the same customary council.
Choose Outer Baduy if
- It is your first time in Baduy or you rarely hike.
- You only have a day.
- You are bringing young children or older parents.
- You are a foreign visitor.
- You want to take photos and buy weaving directly from the makers.
- You want to visit between January and April, when Inner Baduy is closed for Kawalu.
Choose Inner Baduy if
- You are an Indonesian citizen who can walk 4–5 hours over hills.
- You are fine without a phone, electricity, camera, soap and a toilet for a night.
- You want the experience furthest from city life.
Still unsure?
Start with an Outer Baduy overnight. You still sleep in a village home, eat with your hosts and see daily life, with a much easier walk.
